The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, \u201cBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” . . . John testified saying, \u201cI have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, \u2018He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.\u2019 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.\u201d  (John 1:29, 32-34, NASB)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John was baptizing people at the River Jordan.  He saw a Man approaching, but had no idea Who He was.  He saw “the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.”  God told him that this was Jesus, His Son.  But John was explaining an earlier statement which he had made, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”  It’s this statement that’s interesting in this season of Lent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

John’s proclamation was prescient in how Jesus was to die, as a sacrifice which would “take away the sin of the world.”\u00a0 Whereas the Law of Moses called for a spotless, unblemished animal to sacrifice to atone for sins, Jesus was the ultimate Sacrifice.\u00a0 He lived a perfect life, free from sin, so that He would be an acceptable sacrifice to the Father.\u00a0 He was, and is, the spotless Lamb of God.\u00a0 Hope has a name:\u00a0 Jesus.\u00a0 If we accept His sacrifice, then we’ll escape the death we deserve for our sins.\u00a0 Behold, the Lamb of God Who takes away my sin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
