God’s Job

In Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church:

Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.  (1 Corinthians 4:1-5, NASB)

Paul tells the Corinthian church that, unless we know otherwise, we should regard each other “as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.”  His main point is that we shouldn’t judge one another–that’s God’s job!  Paul goes on to say that the primary focus of a steward is to “be found trustworthy.”  Indeed, God’s stewards SHOULD be trustworthy!

Further, Paul says that he isn’t worried about what other people think about him.  He doesn’t even “examine” himself, but he’ll leave that up to the Lord.  Now THAT’S confidence in the Lord!

Finally, Paul tells us that there will come a time for us to be judged, when “he Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.”  NOW is NOT the time or the place to judge one another. We shouldn’t judge one another.  That is God’s function.  Likewise, we should be confident to not worry about what others think about us.  Instead we should have confidence in the Lord that He will someday change us.  He is the ultimate and final Judge.  He will take care of us!  Now THAT’S hope!
