Noah

Then the LORD said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.  (Genesis 7:1, NASB)

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible . . . And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.  (Hebrews 11:1-3, 6-7, NASB)

In the verse from Genesis above, God declares Noah “to be righteous before Me in this time.”  The earth was so filled with wickedness that God decided to make a flood and thus remove all life, except for Noah, his family, and two of every animal (interestingly, all of the “clean” animals, those that God deemed worthy to be sacrificed, God commanded Noah to load by sevens).  Noah alone was deemed as “righteous” by God, or right before Him.

In the passage from Hebrews 11 (commonly known as the “Faith Hall of Fame”) above, Noah is regarded as being righteous because of his faith:  “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”  The author of Hebrews describes faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.”

The “men of old” didn’t have Jesus like we do today.  God relied on people’s faith to deem them “righteous.”  But now we have a Savior by Whom we attain righteousness, or being right before God.  But it still requires faith to come to Christ.  “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”  None of us has seen Jesus.  But by faith we hope for Him.  We are convicted that He came to earth, was crucified on our account, and was raised from the dead by God Almighty.

Being righteous means that Noah is most certainly in heaven.  I can’t wait to talk with him about what it was like to build the ark and care for all those animals.  God declared Noah to be righteous.  He also said that those of us who have placed our faith in the Lord Jesus are right before Him!
